In a press conference, State Police say there are multiple fatalities in Tuesday afternoon's shooting in Appomattox County. They will not specify how many.

They also said the suspect is still at large, but say they do have him contained in a wooded area.

State Police confirmed that the gunman did indeed shoot and hit a State Police helicopter being used in the search. The chopper had to emergency land because of a fuel leak caused by the gunfire.

Authorities say more than 100 officers are working on the case.

They hope to have more concrete information available around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. We'll bring you new details as we know them.

We are waiting for State Police to begin the press conference. As soon as they do, we will stream it live on WSET.com and on WSET-TV. They are hoping to start the conference around 4:30 p.m.

ABC 13 will be breaking into regular programming at 4:00 p.m. to air the State Police press conference regarding the Appomattox County shooting. You can also watch it live in wset.com. The press conference is scheduled to get underway at 4:00 p.m., but State Police say it may be delayed.

UPDATED: 3:07 p.m.

In a release just issued by the Virginia State Police (web) , they say during the shooting incident, the suspect shot at a police helicopter that responded to the search. Shortly afterward, it had to land because of a fuel leak. It's unclear whether or not bullets actually hit the helicopter.

The release also says when emergency crews responded to the call (which came in at 12:02 p.m.), they found a male lying in middle of Route 703 in need of medical assistance.

State Police believe an arrest of the shooting suspect is imminent. Lt. Worsham with state police State Police said they believe they have him contained in an area, but are still working to arrest him.

In an attempt to catch the suspect, police have blocked off an area, including several roads near Virginia State Police Appomattox Division Headquarters, which is also very close to the area where the shooting occurred. Police Tower Road, just off Route 460, is one of the roads closed

State Police are on the scene of a shooting on Route 703 (Snapps Mill Road) in the Spout Spring area of Appomattox County.

The Sheriff?s Office has confirmed one person has been killed. A SWAT team is on the scene, and a State Police helicopter is currently searching for the suspect.

As a precaution, Cornerstone Christian Academy on Police Tower Road has gone on lockdown and an officer placed there. Appomattox County Public Schools are not in session today.
